Intelligent electricity networks or “Smart Grids”
remain at the heart of the energy transition and the development of a more sustainable society.
These systems enable the integration of renewable energies,
decentralized management of production, and more efficient use of resources.
However, for these systems to function fully,
modern infrastructures and digital management are essential.
Since 2020, Spain has stepped up its efforts to modernise its energy infrastructure, notably through the National Integrated Plan for Energy and Climate (PNIEC) for 2021-2030, revised 2023, which aims to 74% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
To support this transformation, the European Union plans to invest 584 billion euros in electricity networks by 2030, including 170 billion dedicated to scanning.
This transformation of energy infrastructure is necessary to achieve global carbon neutrality targets.
In Spain, the “big four ” GRDs (Endesa, Iberdrola, Naturgy and EDP) control 75% of the market. These key players are fully involved in network modernization and adaptation to Smart Grids.
The deployment of smart meters is almost complete, and the focus is now on introducing new monitoring systems in secondary substations, which 30 to 40% have already been upgraded.
The Distribution Network Managers (GRD) are engaged in modernization and digitization plans. They advocate that the “Next Generation” funds dedicated to renewable energies should also be invested in the modernisation of electricity infrastructure, which could accelerate investments in the coming years.
In this context, the GRD’s will need to invest heavily in Smart Grids. Low voltage output monitoring, cyber security and automation of substations, especially in low voltage, become a priority to ensure quality of supply and meet customer expectations for network management and monitoring.
With a presence in several markets, LACROIX continues to develop its expertise in Germany and Spain.
In Germany, the market for distribution network managers (GRD) is fragmented: more than 800 players share this responsibility! To compare, ENEDIS holds a 96% market share in France.
Although the Spanish distribution network is stable and robust, the massive integration of renewable energy and increased electrification could threaten the stability of the system if appropriate measures are not taken.
The implementation of digital control systems is an indispensable lever to meet these challenges and accompany the energy transformation of the country.
The rise of self-consumption, and electric vehicles, increases the need to monitor low voltage outputs and paves the way for telemetry.
LACROIX’s experience and in-depth knowledge of market needs will be crucial to meet the needs of the Spanish electricity distribution market.
The energy transition in Spain, supported by investments in renewable energies, requires smart infrastructures capable of managing new energy flows.
LACROIX stands out through its activity Environment, by virtue of its ability to modernize critical water and energy infrastructures, Spain and internationally.
LACROIX, with more than 500 customers, offers electrical network monitoring and management equipment. To meet all individual needs, we have developed a directory (or library) of hundreds of scenarios, always implemented differently.
Our expertise is highly valued internationally, as our solutions adapt to each specific local interpretation of Smart Grids.
LACROIX provides equipment and connected and secure solutions for remote management of electricity networks, but also water systems management, Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as street lighting.
In parallel, the activity Electronics of LACROIX strengthens this management through the design and manufacture of industrial IoT solutions.
These solutions enable remote infrastructure management and optimization to meet the growing need for digitization of electrical networks, thus improving energy efficiency.
Spain, committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 43% by 2030, is focusing on the gradual closure of coal-fired power plants and increasing investment in renewable energy, particularly in medium/low voltage infrastructures.
With its international experience and mastery of the Spanish market, LACROIX supports this transition by providing IoT solutions to modernize medium/low voltage power networks, contributing to smarter infrastructure and climate goals.
